Horizon Middle School LeadershipSeptember 2, 2009
Dear Parents,
Welcome to another year at Horizon Middle School. This letter is to acquaint you with the Leadership Elective Class. This is the second year we have offered a leadership class at Horizon . The purpose of a leadership class is to encourage students to become more active in their school, both at the middle and high school level. We will be examining our beliefs regarding leadership, identifying the attributes of a good leader, and finally applying it to our own lives. This year I will be using Building Everyday Leadership in All Teens by Mariam MacGregor as a reference.
During the course of the class, students will be expected to help plan assemblies, school wide “theme” days, service projects, and the 2009/ 2010 Horizon Yearbook. In addition, I will be asking students to meet with the ASB and PTO to help coordinate activities and increase communication. Students will be expected to work in groups, independently, and with adults. Students will have opportunities to meet with professionals in the community and develop public speaking skills. When planning the yearbook, students will have an opportunity to work with technology, including digital cameras and Adobe Photoshop.
I look forward to an exciting quarter with the students. My hope is that each student finds this class both challenging, yet rewarding. Grading will be based on participation, group work, and some class work.
